Hello Everyone, my name is Nana Kwabena Sarpong. I live and work as a software developer in Kumasi, Ghana. Having lived my formative life in Cape Coast speaking the Fante language, it came to me as a shock when I moved to Kumasi in 1998 and couldn’t speak very good Twi. Don’t get me wrong, Twi sounds a little like Fante so I could communicate to some extent. The problem was my Twi vocabulary was so limited and try as I might I couldn’t get the accent right. I really want to learn Fante but I could not find courses in Fante. I decided to study twi and later learn the differences if I could communicate in twi. Is this a good approach? Is there enough interest to develop a course in Fante?
Yes, it’s a reasonable approach considering the fact that both dialects come from the same Akan language. When you learn Twi you will be able to understand what a Fante person says even though the accent is different.
