Two Meanings to a Word (Heteronyms)

A heteronym is a group of words with identical spellings but different meanings and pronunciations. Heteronyms in Asante Twi fall under Nasal and Tonal categories. The Nasal is said as though saying the word through the nose while the Tonal is characterized by the rise and fall of the tone used to pronounce the word.

Pronouncing Asante Twi heteronyms can be a bit difficult for westerners, due to the tonal and nasal effects ascribed to them. I’ve put together below 10 Twi heteronyms, 5 nasal and 5 tonal, that will enrich your Asante Twi vocabulary.

NASAL

Nsa Drink Nsa Hand
Ka Knead Ka Bite
Papa Fan Papa Good
Su Cry Su Character
To Bake To Throw

TONAL

Papa Father Papa Good
Dua Tree Dua Plant (v)
Mmoa Animals Mmoa Help
Kasa Language Kasa Speak
Ɔwɔ Snake Ɔwɔ He/She has

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog. A great read. I’ll certainly be back.
